A wireless message communication system ( ) delivers dynamically configurable datagram messages between a server ( ) and subscriber units ( ). The server ( ) queries a subscriber unit ( ) for its data capability profile, such as supported data types, number of data fields, size of each data field, and data type for each data field. The server ( ) and the subscriber unit ( ) dynamically configure a message datagram ( ) to conform message information in transmitted data to the data capability profile of the subscriber unit ( ).
