A guidewire filter ( ) has an elongate hollow tube ( ) with a proximal end, a distal end, an inside, an outside surface, and a lumen formed therethrough. The hollow tube ( ) has a plurality of longitudinal slots ( ) forming a plurality of longitudinal rib portions ( ) near the distal region of the hollow tube ( ). An actuating wire ( ) with a proximal end, and a distal end is provided. Filter material ( ) is positioned within the lumen in the hollow tube ( ). An activation handle ( ) on the proximal end of the device ( ) is provided for pulling the actuating wire ( ) relative to the hollow tube ( ).
