Abstract
An autofocusing system in which optimal or nearly optimal linear filters are selected for filtering an image signal so that the components of the image signal which contain image content, and thus, focus information are amplified while the components of the image signal which contain noise are damped. One set of nearly optimal linear filters are modified second order difference filters in which the number of internal zeros are modified to tune the filter to the particular equipment.
