The present invention relates to the discovery that the &agr;-dystroglycan receptor is required for,entry into cells, assays for high throughput screening of drugs for use in treatments against leprosy, and methods for studying the role of the receptor in neurodegenerative and musculodegenerative diseases, and the like.
