Abstract
A coil assembly (,) used with a magnet assembly (,) for a linear or planar electric motor (,) is provided herein. The coil assembly (,) includes a plurality of coils (,) attached to a coil base (,) with a plurality of coil supports (,). The coil supports (,) secure the coils (,) to the coil base (,) with the coils (,) spaced apart from a first surface (,) of the coil base (,). As a result thereof, both sides (,), (,) of each coil (,) are exposed for cooling. Further, the coil supports (,) allow the coils (,) to expand laterally with minimal stress and thermal deformation. The coil assembly (,) can also include a plurality of spaced apart covers (,). Each cover (,) fits over one of the coils (,) and is secured to the coil base (,). A fluid (,) can be directed into a fluid passageway (,) around each coil (,) to cool each coil (,).
