Abstract
Described are non-invasive methods of detecting and/or quantifying specific nucleic acid sequences by analyzing urine samples for nucleic acids that have crossed the kidney barrier. More specifically, the present invention encompasses methods of analyzing specific fetal nucleic acid sequences by analyzing maternal urine for the presence of fetal nucleic acids. The invention further encompasses methods of analyzing specific nucleic acid alterations for the diagnosis of disease. The invention encompasses methods of analyzing specific nucleic acid alterations for the diagnosis of cancer and the monitoring of its treatment. The invention further encompasses methods of analyzing specific nucleic acids in urine to track the success of transplanted cells, tissues and organs.
