Abstract
Disclosed is an aluminum oxide coated tool member which comprises a substrate, an intermediate layer containing elements of Al, Ti, O and C provided on the substrate and an outer layer adjacent to the intermediate layer, wherein the outer layer comprises Al,O,, and the intermediate layer comprises at least one layer selected from the group consisting of a single-phase layer of a composite carboxide containing Ti and Al, and a complex-phase layer in which at least two selected from the group consisting of TiC, TiN, Ti(C,N), Ti(C,O), Ti(N,O), Ti(C,N,O), Al,O,, AlN, Al(O,N), Al(O,C), Al(O,N,C), a composite nitride containing Ti and Al, a composite oxide containing Ti and Al, a composite carboxide containing Ti and Al, a composite nitroxide containing Ti and Al, and a composite carbonitroxide containing Ti and Al are dispersed.
