An apparatus and method for determining the speed of an elevator car. A radar speed sensor (,) is provided determining the velocity of an elevator car (,). The speed sensor produces a signal which is processed by a processor (,) and compared to a threshold speed value by speed detection module (,). The speed detection module produces an overspeed signal (,) triggering the operation of actuator (,) and safety brake (,).
