Abstract

A fuel cell structure (,) is provided, having a pre-sintered nickel-zirconia fuel electrode (,) and an air electrode (,), with a ceramic electrolyte (,) disposed between the electrodes, where the pre-sintered fuel electrode (,) contains particles selected from the group consisting of nickel oxide, cobalt and cerium dioxide particles and mixtures thereof, and titanium dioxide particles, within a matrix of yttria-stabilized zirconia and spaced-apart filamentary nickel strings having a chain structure, and where the fuel electrode can be sintered to provide an active solid oxide fuel cell.
