Abstract
An optical fiber having a multi-step core structure, and a method of fabricating the same, are provided. The optical fiber includes a central core having a predetermined radius a,from an central axis and a refractive index n,, a first outer core having a radius a,and a refractive index n,smaller than the refractive index n,and surrounding the central core, a second outer core having a radius a,and a refractive index n,smaller than the refractive index n,and surrounding the first outer core, and a cladding having a radius a,and a refractive index n,smaller than the refractive index n,and surrounding the second outer core, i.e., a,<a,<a,<a,and n,>n,>n,>n,The diameter of the core is increased by making the refractive index distribution of the core multi-stepped, thus providing easy fabrication. The optical fiber has a low dispersion value in a 1550 nm wavelength, thus making superspeed long distance transmission possible.
