Abstract
A recording layer of rewritable phase-change material is directly overwritten by a pulsing laser spot irradiating at a writing power level, then irradiating at a lower cool-down power level during a cool-down period, and then irradiating at an erasing level with a higher power than the cool-down level. The duration of the cool-down period depends on the spot size and/or on the linear velocity of the spot with respect to the recording layer.
