Abstract

A loop-scavenged two-stroke internal combustion engines with an intake valve (,) engaging a seat (,) for fresh air intake, and an exhaust valve (,) engaging a seat (,) for combustion gas exhaust, is disclosed. The valves are arranged in such a way that the fresh air intake scavenges a substantial part of the burnt gases. In at least one of the valves, the valve surface (,) located downstream from the valve face (,) and the surface (,) of the downstream extension of the seat (,) are configured in such a way that they form a substantially isentropic diffuser.
