Abstract
An inflatable trim panel assembly (,) operable to provide a gas-filled cushion for protecting the vehicle occupant in an accident situation. The trim panel assembly (,) includes a support member (,), an elastic skin (,) attached to the periphery of the support member (,), and tethers (,) that are secured between the elastic skin (,) and the support member (,). The trim panel assembly (,) also includes an inflator (,) which, upon activation, supplies gas to the sealed area (,) between the elastic skin (,) and the support member (,) causing expansion of the elastic skin (,) and formation of an energy absorbing safety restraint cushion.
