C. and a particle diameter of 1 to 500 .mu.m with 100 parts by weight of an oxygen absorbing composition containing an ascorbic acid compound, water and an activated carbon. The oxygen absorber can inhibit overheat to prevent spontaneous ignition. Further, the activated carbon has a particle diameter of 0.1 to 2 mm and the ascorbic acid compound includes L-ascorbic acid, sodium L-ascorbate, calcium L-ascorbate and sodium D-iso-ascorbate.
