Abstract

A composite laminate suitable for preparing labels is described. The composite laminate, in one embodiment, comprises (A) a substrate sheet of paper; (B) a first coating of polyolefin film having a printable upper surface and a lower surface bonded to the upper surface of the substrate sheet; (C) a second coating of polyolefin film having its upper surface bonded to the lower surface of the substrate sheet; and (D) a third coating comprising a pressure-sensitive adhesive on the lower surface of the second coating of polyolefin film. These composites may be used as the face of other composites such as labels, tapes, etc. These composite laminates exhibit film-like performance and paper-like strength. When the face laminates are matched with a complimentary release liner, the resulting composite laminate resists curling when exposed to the extremes of temperature and moisture, and the exposed upper surface of said laminates can be imprinted xerographically by means of laser printers or other copying machines with or without the application of primers, inks and over-varnishes required of many prior art laminates. In another embodiment, composite liner laminates are described which comprises (A) a substrate sheet of paper; (B) a first coating of polyolefin film having an upper surface and a lower surface wherein the lower surface is in contact with and bonded to the upper surface of the substrate sheet; (C) a second coating of polyolefin film having its upper surface in contact with and bonded to the lower surface of the substrate sheet; and (D) a resin coating in contact with and bonded to the lower surface of the second coating of polyolefin film said resin coating having a coefficient of friction which is greater than the coefficient of friction of the second coating of polyolefin film.
