Vaccines compositions comprising a pharmaceutically acceptable vehicle and a bovine herpesvirus 1 (BHV-1) wherein at (i) least one non-essential gene is deleted or (ii) an essential gene is mutated are also provided. In addition, related vectors, DNA constructs, a diagnostic assay and methods for treating and preventing BHV-1 infection and other bacterial and viral pathogens of cattle are provided.
