The present invention provides a new and useful method for controlling microwave energy distribution in the reaction chamber of a fluidized bed reactor by tapering the reaction zone of the reaction chamber so that the cross-section diameter at the lower end differs from the cross-section diameter at the upper end by a factor of .sqroot..epsilon..sub.r .
