Abstract

Mechanical grinding of graphite, soft carbon coke, or hard carbon over the range of 20-80 hours produces carbon powders which may be incorporated into secondary lithium battery electrodes to yield improved reversible lithium intercalation capacity of up to about 708 mAh/g, thus approximating Li.sub.2 C.sub.6, with irreversible intercalation of only about 328 mAh/g.
