In a method in the form of a pulse sequence for operating a diagnostic magnetic resonance apparatus, a predecessor gradient field and a successor gradient field are generated in an examination volume. The predecessor and successor gradient fields are spatially rotated relative to one another by an angle unequal to 90.degree.. The predecessor gradient and the successor gradient field are generated partially overlapping in time.
