Abstract

Disclosed herein is a method of producing pearlescent pigments comprised of a platelet substrate and a TiO.sub.2 coating, which has a rutile structure and which does not contain foreign metal species. The method entails the deposition of Ti(III), followed by the deposition of a Ti(IV), onto the platelet substrate.
