Abstract
The invention describes a process for the preparation of .delta.-decalactone or .delta.-dodecalactone by the hydrogenation of 2-decen-5-olide and 2-dodecen-5-olide, or a derivative therof, by a bacteria capable of effecting said hydrogenation, preferably by a bacteria of the Clostridium genus. In an embodiment of the invention, 5-hydroxy-2-decenoic acid or 5-hydroxy-2-dodecenoic acid is used as substrate in the hydrogenation reaction.
