Abstract

The present invention relates to a method for the prevention of growth of algae by incorporating within liquids or coating on surfaces certain substituted amino alcohols. More precisely, this invention provides for algistat end uses for amino alcohol compounds endowed with chain extension which have the general formula: ##STR1## wherein n is 1-1000; and R.sub.1 =R.sub.2, and R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are from the croup consisting of --CH.sub.2 --CH.sub.2 --; --CH.sub.2 --C(CH.sub.3)H--; and --C(CH.sub.3)H--CH.sub.2 --; R.sub.3, and R.sub.4 are each independently selected from the group consisting of H, --CH.sub.3, --CH.sub.2 CH.sub.3, --CH.sub.2 OH, and --CH.sub.2 --CH.sub.2 --OH; and the diasteromeric salts thereof.
