Abstract
A DC--DC switching regulator which converts a supplied DC voltage V.sub.DD to a DC output voltage V.sub.OUT for driving a load using a DC--DC buck converter operated with fixed-width pulses V.sub.X at an instantaneous switching rate n.sub.i. The regulator has a feedback for computing a subsequent switching rate n.sub.i+1 based on the instantaneous switching rate n.sub.i, an output frequency f.sub.OUT derived from output voltage V.sub.OUT by a ring oscillator and a desired frequency f.sub.DES provided by a frequency signaling device or a frequency signaling port of the load. By altering the desired frequency f.sub.DES the load communicates its power needs. The regulator can be used in the low-power regime and at high power levels.
