Abstract

A liquid aqueous laundry detergent composition having improved cleaning properties and comprising a nonionic surfactant; about 0.25 to about 20 wt. % of an N--C.sub.8 --C.sub.20 alkyl and/or N-unsaturated C.sub.16 -C.sub.18 hydrocarbyl amine of a C.sub.1 -C.sub.7 monocarboxylic acid or salt thereof as an amphoteric surfactant; an alkaline substance in an amount sufficient to cause the wash liquor containing said detergent composition to have a pH of about 8 to about 11 determined ten minutes after the initiation of washing under standard conditions; and about 30 to about 95 wt. % of water, based on the total weight of the composition.
