Abstract

The reaction of polyvinyl acetate in methanolic solution with methanolic sodium hydroxide at a temperature between 10.degree. C. and 65.degree. C. with stirring at a stirring speed of from 5 to 200 rpm with a stirrer which has a ratio of stirrer diameter (d) to container diameter (D) in the range of 0.6<d/D<0.999 leads to a homogeneously hydrolyzed polyvinyl alcohol.
