Abstract
A recording and/or reproducing apparatus arranged to permit, each of a plurality of types of tape cassettes having different distances between reels to be selectively mounted on the apparatus by moving reel mounts with a reel mount moving mechanism and to allow a tape pulled out from the reels to travel while mechanically controlling the tension of the tape with a tape tension control mechanism in recording or reproducing information on or from the tape, includes a plurality of reel mount braking devices respectively provided for the plurality of types of tape cassettes, at least one of the braking devices being supported for translation relative to another of the braking devices and a coupling controller for selectively coupling one of the plurality of reel mount braking devices to the reel mount and a tape tension detecting means according to the type of the tape cassette mounted on the apparatus.
