Abstract

A lead-free composition capable of being applied as a film and hardening to form a protective layer on the back of a mirror comprises a fluid organic resin and a corrosion inhibitor selected from a compound represented by the formula: ##STR1## wherein the individual radicals R.sup.1, R.sup.2, R.sup.3 and R.sup.4 can be identical or different and are each hydrogen, an aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, araliphatic or aromatic radical, and can be substituted or unsubstituted; A is hydrogen or C.sub.z --CR.sup.5 R.sup.6 CN; X, Y and Z are independently selected from 0-5; and R.sup.5 and R.sup.6 are as defined for R.sup.1, R.sup.2, R.sup.3 and R.sup.4 above. To inhibit the corrosion of metallic film layers on mirrors, a mirror having a glass substrate layer and metallic film layer thereover should be obtained, after which the fluid organic resin coating system containing the aforementioned corrosion inhibitor is applied over the metallic film layer. The organic resin coating system is then hardened to produce the protective coating layer over the metallic layer. Other articles having metallic surfaces may also be protected by the resin system containing the novel corrosion inhibitor of the present invention.
