Abstract

A method of detecting the presence of robbed-bit signaling within the digital portion of a telephone network. A communication system includes an encoder and a decoder. The encoder has a digital connection to the digital portion of the telephone network. The digital portion of the telephone network is connected by an analog loop to the decoder. The method includes sending a predetermined pattern of PCM codewords from the encoder, through the telephone network, to the decoder. An error measurement is taken at the decoder. The presence of robbed-bit signaling is determined based upon the error measurement.
