Abstract
An imidazole derivative of the general formula (1): ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are each a hydrogen atom or an alkyl, aryl, acyl or aralkyl group, X and Y are each an oxygen or sulfur atom, and Z is a substituted alkyl group is prepared by reducing a thienoimidazole carboxylic acid of the general formula (2): ##STR2## in an alcoholic solvent using a palladium catalyst, adding an adsorbent and an ion exchange resin, chelate resin or polymeric flocculating agent to the reaction mixture, and removing the spent catalyst from the reaction mixture.
