Abstract

In a recording and reproducing apparatus, a digital luminance signal and digital color difference signals generated from an input video signal. A digital audio signal is generated from an input audio signal. The digital luminance signal, the digital color difference signals, and the digital audio signal are time-base-compressed into a compression-resultant luminance signal, compression-resultant color difference signals, and a compression-resultant audio signal, respectively. The compression-resultant luminance signal, the compression-resultant color difference signals, and the compression-resultant audio signal are multiplexed into a multiplexing-resultant signal on a time-division-multiplexing basis. The multiplexing-resultant signal is recorded on a recording medium. The multiplexing-resultant signal is reproduced from the recording medium. The original digital luminance signal, the original digital color difference signals, and the original digital audio signal are recovered from the reproduced multiplexing-resultant signal.
