Abstract

This disclosure relates to a process for preparing bis(hydroxymethyl)pyrrolopyrrole compounds of the formula ##STR1## wherein A.sub.1 and A.sub.2 are aryl radicals, by reacting a 1,4-diketopyrrolopyrrole with formaldehyde. The compound of formula (II) can be isolated or further reacted in a one pot synthesis to yield a compound of the formula ##STR2## wherein B.sub.1 and B.sub.2 are organic radicals.
