Abstract

Aa process for preparing an irreversibly dried coal which utilizes a fluidized bed reactor with a fluidized bed density of from about 20 to about 40 pounds cubic feet which is at a temperature of from about 150 to about 200 degrees Fahrenheit. To this reactor is fed coal with a moisture content of from about 25 to about 30 percent, an oxygen content of from about 10 to about 20 percent, and a volatile matter content of from about 35 to about 45 percent; and it is subjected to a temperature of from about 150 to about 200 degrees Fahrenheit for from about 1 to about 5 minutes while simultaneously being comminuted and dewatered. The comminuted and dewatered coal is passed to a second fluidized bed reactor with a fluidized bed density of from about 20 to about 40 pounds per cubic foot and a reactor temperature of from about 480 to about 600 degrees Fahrenheit. Also fed to this second fluidized bed reactor is from about 0.5 to about 3.0 weight percent of mineral oil.
