Abstract

An effective and efficient process for the preparation of a dihaloazolopyrimidine having the structural formula ##STR1## In this process, a malonic acid ester is reacted with a heterocyclylamine to form an intermediate salt, which optionally may be acidified to form a dihydroxyazolopyrimidine; the salt or the dihydroxyazolopyrimidine is then halogenated.
