Abstract
The invention is directed to a sabot having a longitudinal axis and comprising a plurality of sabot segments. Each of the sabot segments comprises a repeating structure of: (a) a plurality of plies of a first fibrous material oriented radially from the longitudinal axis, wherein each fiber of the first fibrous material is oriented substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis; and (b) a plurality of plies of a second fibrous material, wherein each fiber of the second fibrous material is oriented nonparallel to the longitudinal axis and substantially parallel to every other fiber of the second fibrous material. The total number of plies in each repeating structure is at least five (5). The invention is also directed to an APFSDS kinetic energy tank projectile that utilizes the above-described sabot.
