Abstract

An acenaphthene compound of the following formula (1), ##STR1## wherein Ar.sub.1 is an aryl group which may have a substituent; Ar.sub.2 is a phenylene, naphthylene, biphenylene or anthrylene group which may have a substituent; R.sub.1 is a hydrogen atom, a lower alkyl group or a lower alkoxy group; X is a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group which may have a substituent or an aryl group which may have a substituent; and Y is an aryl group which may have a substituent or a group of the formula (2), ##STR2## wherein R.sub.2 is a hydrogen atom, a lower alkyl group or a lower alkoxy group, R.sub.3 is a hydrogen atom, a halogen atom or a lower alkyl group, Z is a hydrogen atom or an aryl group which may have a substituent, and m and n are an integer of from 0 to 4.
