Process for the preparation of pure 4,6-dichloropyrimidine by reaction of 4,6-dihydroxypyrimidine with an excess of phosphorus oxychloride at 20.degree. C. up to reflux temperature, in the presence of a trialkylamine as acid scavenger and catalyst.
