Abstract

The invention relates to a process for the preparation of compounds of formula ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 is hydrogen, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl or sulfo, and R.sub.2 is hydrogen or C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl, which process comprises reacting a compound of formula ##STR2## wherein Hal is halogen and R.sub.1 has the meaning given above, with a compound of formula ##STR3## wherein Y is a saponifiable group and R.sub.2 has the meaning given above, to give the compound of formula ##STR4## wherein R.sub.1, R.sub.2 and Y have the meanings given above, and saponifying the compound of formula (4) to give the compound of formula (1). The compounds of formula (1) are suitable for the synthesis of dyes.
