Abstract

The invention comprises a novel pyruvate compound for the treatment or prevention of reperfusion injury following ischemia. The novel pyruvate compound is particularly a pyruvate thiolester. Preferably, the thiol is selected from a cysteine or a methionine amino acid. In a particularly preferred form, the compound is an N-acetyl ethyl ester of the cysteine or methionine amino acid.
