Abstract

4-Hydroxyphenyl benzoate derivatives of the general formula 1: ##STR1## are prepared by cleaving 1,4-bis(benzoyl)hydroquinone derivatives of the general formula 2: ##STR2## with alkali metal alkanolates, in which in the general formulae 1 and 2 R.sup.1 to R.sup.14 are as defined in claim 1.
