Topically applicable hair growth-/hair loss-affecting cosmetic/therapeutic compositions are disclosed for treating mammalian subjects with hair or scalp disorders comprising an effective amount of at least one .alpha.-pyrone compound as kavain, formulated into a physiologically topically acceptable carrier medium, whether organic or aqueous, or mixtures thereof.
