Abstract

A recording and/or reproducing apparatus for a recording medium including a head for reproducing the information on or from the recording medium, a movement mechanism for moving the recording medium between a first position enabling recording and/or reproducing of information signals by the head and a second position above the first position for performing an exchange operation, a lock mechanism for locking the movement mechanism at the first position, a controller for moving the head between a position proximate to the recording medium and an upper position spaced apart from the recording medium, and, engagement means moved by the controller and engaged by the lock mechanism, the engagement means engaging with the lock mechanism by the controller and moving between an engagement position engaged with the lock mechanism and disengaged from the lock mechanism by a ejecting operation and a lock release position of being released from the position of being disengaged from the lock mechanism as a result of the ejecting operation, wherein, when the head is at the upper position spaced apart from the recording medium, the engagement means is positioned at the position of being engaged with the lock mechanism and releases the lock of the movement mechanism by the lock mechanism at the first position, and wherein, when the head is proximate to the recording medium, the engagement means is caused to move to the lock release position by the controller.
