Abstract
A method for assessing the level of genomic instability in a malignant tumor is described. The method involves comparison of the structure of one or more interspersed repetitive sequence loci in tumor and corresponding normal tissue samples. Microsatellite repetitive sequences are one useful form of interspersed repetitive sequence that may be employed to characterize the genomic instability associated with some malignant tumors. This assessment provides an additional prognostic indicator for patients having such malignant tumors.
