Abstract

An improved process for producing N-(.alpha.-alkoxyethyl)formamide by reacting formamide with acetaldehyde in the presence of a basic catalyst, thereby giving N-(.alpha.-hydroxyethyl)formamide, and reacting it with a primary or secondary alcohol in the presence of an acid catalyst, thereby giving N-(.alpha.-alkoxyethyl)formamide, characterized in that the basic catalyst is alkali metal bicarbonate or alkali metal hydrogenphosphate.
