.beta.-Substituted cinnamic acid derivatives of the formula 1, ##STR1## where R.sup.1 is alkyl, chlorine or bromine, --X-- is --O--, --S--, ##STR2## m is 0 or 1, --Y is --OR.sup.4, --O--N.dbd.CR.sup.5 R.sup.6, --NR.sup.7 R.sup.8, --N(OR.sup.9)R.sup.10 or --SR.sup.11, where the above-mentioned substituents R.sup.2 to R.sup.11 are alkyl, and R.sup.2, and R.sup.3 and R.sup.5 to R.sup.11 can also be hydrogen,
