Abstract

A process of preparing optically active alpha-chlorocarboxylic esters having the formula: ##STR1## from an optically active alpha-hydroxy carboxylic ester having the formula: ##STR2## in which process, an alpha-hydroxy carboxylate of formula II is brought into contact with phosgene and a compound chosen from amides, lactams and ureas, wherein R.sub.1 is an optionally substituted hydrocarbyl residue and R is preferably a methyl group.
