Abstract
A borate ester having the formula ##STR1## wherein Y is N, S or O, X is O or S, R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 are, independent of one another, selected from the group consisting of H, (C.sub.1 -C.sub.40)hydrocarbon residues and (C.sub.3 -C.sub.50)cycloalkyl, aryl and aralkyl, each of which may further contain N, O or S, R.sup.3, R.sup.4, R.sup.5, R.sup.6 and R.sup.7 are independent of one another, selected from the group consisting of H and (C.sub.1 -C.sub.8)hydrocarbon residues, n is 0 to 4. An anti-wear/anti-oxidant/anti-friction/anti-rust additive comprises the borate ester of the invention when added to a lubricating oil.
