Abstract

A process for the production of azophenothiazine derivatives having either of the following structures: ##STR1## where X and Y include alkyl, alkoxy, halogen, hydrogen, carboxy, or carboxy alkyl substituents. These compounds are precursors to pharmaceutically active compounds such as pipacetate. The process involves the reaction of a 2-chloropyridine with a 2-mercaptoaniline or a dimer of 2-(2-mercaptophenylamino)pyridine in an inert solvent, e.g., .gradient.-methylpyrolidone in the presence of an oxidizing agent, e.g., performic acid.
