Abstract
In a calculating device, a control part performs arithmetic processing by an iterative method based on a mathematical expression inputted by an operator, an initial value for a variable in the mathematical expression, and a solution existing range in which a solution of the mathematical expression is expected to exist. The device has an upper limit memory for storing an upper limit of the solution existing range and a lower limit memory for storing a lower limit of the solution existing range. After calculating a value X.sub.n+1 through an (n+1)th iterative operation from a value X.sub.n resulting from an n'th iterative operation, the control part compares X.sub.n+1 and X.sub.n. When X.sub.n+1 is larger than X.sub.n, the control part causes the lower limit memory to store X.sub.n such that X.sub.n becomes a new lower limit of the solution existing range. Further, when X.sub.n+1 is smaller than X.sub.n, the control part causes the upper limit memory to store X.sub.n such that the X.sub.n becomes a new upper limit. Then the control part discriminates whether X.sub.n+1 is within or out of the solution existing range. When X.sub.n+1 is within the solution existing range, the control part performs a (n+2)th iterative operation, and when X.sub.n+1 is out of the solution existing range, the control part stops the calculation.
