Abstract

For providing a molded catalyst or a supported catalyst which has an excellent mechanical strength and is intended for producing methacrolein and methacrylic acid from isobutylene or tertiary butanol, the surface of a molded catalyst or a supported catalyst which contains molybdenum, bismuth and iron is coated with one or more highly depolymerizable organic high-molecular weight compounds. When used, the catalyst is packed into a reactor and then heated to remove the organic high-molecular weight compound(s) by depolymerization.
