Abstract
A magnetic recording medium is disclosed, comprising a nonmagnetic support having thereon a magnetic layer containing a ferromagnetic powder and a binder, wherein the magnetic layer contains at least one of .alpha.-Al.sub.2 O.sub.3 and Cr.sub.2 O.sub.3 in an amount of 5 to 15% by weight based on the weight of the ferromagnetic powder, the density of at least one of .alpha.-Al.sub.2 O.sub.3 and Cr.sub.2 O.sub.3 in the surface of the magnetic layer is less than 0.25/.mu.m.sup.2, the intensity ratio of Al spectrum to Fe spectrum as determined by ESCA is in the range of 0.05 to 0.20, or the intensity ratio of Cr spectrum to Fe spectrum as determined by ESCA is in the range of 0.02 to 0.08, and the magnetic layer contains a fatty acid or a fatty acid ester, and the fatty acid or fatty acid ester is orientated in the surface of the magnetic layer. And further a process for producing the above magnetic recording medium is disclosed.
